Devil Deal Blues hits the big screen for the first time at 7 p.m. Friday, May 1 in the Walter Reade Theater at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York.
The short film will screen at the 28th Annual Columbia University Film Festival, a week-long program of screenings, dramatic readings, and special events recognizing the accomplishments of students in the university’s School of the Arts Film Program. Tickets are on sale now.
We’ll be taking Devil Deal Blues on a road trip soon, and we look forward to a San Antonio screening this fall in celebration of the anniversary of Johnson’s recordings!
Thanks again to the San Antonio actors, crew and cast members who helped bring this project to fruition. We’ll see you soon!
This November 23, on the anniversary of Robert Johnson’s original San Antonio sessions, we’ll go into the studio at Prentis Hall in NYC to complete filming of this ground-breaking short film.
Take a look at how far we’ve come! Click through active links below to see more detail.
- Pre-production – Hosted by the San Antonio Film Commission and the San Antonio Blues Society, we visited San Antonio where we shot location photos, interviewed crew, and went on TV to call for volunteers and in-kind donations. We developed a stripped down budget just to get the location footage in the can. As part of winning the San Antonio Film Commission’s national studentfilmproject.com competition, we agreed to blog and use social media to promote the project extensively.
- Production – 2013 began with a location shoot in San Antonio with 123 actors, crew and extras. The City of San Antonio banded together with us to take the project from idea to reality. We brought the footage back to Columbia for extensive review and critique. Now we’re raising money to complete production by the end of 2013. We’re planning a November studio shoot and several recording sessions to cover the onscreen guitar and the big band dance numbers.
- Post-production – And in 2014, by April 1, we plan to have a final cut and sound mix of the film. During April we’ll touch up color and score the film, and we premiere in NYC at Lincoln Center May 2-5 as part of the Columbia University Film Festival.
From there, we will share the film with audiences around the world, igniting the possibility of making a feature adaptation.
Thank you San Antonio for everything you’re doing to help us make this movie! It’s a project that will only happen with many hands.
